Vets fume over Anzac fee

WOODBURN’S Anzac Day march may be cancelled this year after its RSL sub-branch was asked to pay Richmond Valley Council $10,000 to divert traffic off the Pacific Highway march route for an hour.

Woodburn-Evans Head RSL sub-branch president Darryl Pobje said it was the first time council had asked for payment in the club’s history.

“This is the most significant day of the year and council should be paying us to march,” he said.

*.*.*.*.*.*.*.

I guess this is the concept of “user pays” .

The Road Traffic Authority and the Council are saying:

“We don’t care that you went to Iraq, Aghanistan, Africa, Vietnam, Malaya, Borneo, Korea, WW2 and wherever else to defend the country at the request of your Government, your Government isn’t going to pay to divert traffic so that you and the public can commemorate those who have fallen.

You should pay”

Apparently the AWU and John Laws have paid so that the RSL in Woodburn can March, and thanks to them for that, but it’s not the point.

The Council and the Road Traffic Authority need a good kick up the freckle to wake up to themselves, as do the Mayor, CEO, Director General and the relevant Minister, I don’t think you would get many people complaining about having to be diverted around Woodburn for a few hours so that diggers and the public can commemorate the fallen.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Bureaucrats, mourn your paper cuts, ink-stained pockets and shiny-arsed trousers, while you penalise those who defend us.
